Playing Cowboys and Indians: NAB design

Missing those fun-filled days playing cowboys & Indians? Inspired by the North-American Indian legacy, Nicolas Abdelkader designed a coat hanger made of hand-turned beechwood. Initially trained as a draughtsman, the French designer spent 8 years working in architectural firms before setting up his own design studio, NAB, in 2014. Nicolas Abdelkader is focused on "establishing a strong interaction between the user and the object - turning this latter into an actual "Plus one" rather than seeing it as an inanimate object." Aiming towards implementing a dynamic based on material, sustainability and human interaction, the designer adds his personal touch: a pinch of humor. "Design shouldn't take itself too seriously!"

Asia meets Scandinavia: designing a “New Layer”

Initiated by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), the project started when designers Matti Klenell, Stina Löfgren, Carina Seth Andersson, Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom were invited to Asia in 2012. Two years later, the exhibition titled "A New Layer" will showcase in Stockholm (November 12th to February 8th) the results of this collaboration: contemporary objects made with the ancient technique of lacquer, used in East Asia for over 7000 years. Matti Klenell explains: "The title A New Layer refers to how the lacquer is applied in several layers until the desired surface sheen occurs. Historically, China and Japan have been the prime regions for the development of the lacquer art form. Artisans have not only mastered a single method, but developed a variety of ways in which the coating is used, both as a functional and a decorative material". (…)

Somebody at NellyRodi's must be a keen Sleek design reader, for we could not but notice that, after Gesa Hansen, the trend & forecasting agency just picked up designer Anouchka Potdevin (whose uncommon Dsàt seat will stand proudly in the Lafayette Maison windows during the Paris design week) to exhibit her work at Maison&Objet.

Front Design, Story Vases : Durban-Stockholm

In 2008, Stockholm-based curators Renée Padt and Ikko Yokoyama founded Editions in Craft (EiC), an international platform willing to gather artists and designers around the technical and artistic possibilities of traditional crafts and specialized manufacturing. For the EiC, the Front Design ladies travelled to Durban, South Africa, to meet other women.
