Massimo Vignelli (1931-2014): visually powerful, intellectually elegant, above all timeless

Massimo Vignelli passed away on May 27th, aged 83. Working with his wife Lella, Massimo Vignelli designed some of the most well-known logos and objects of our era: Ford, Lancia, IBM, American Airlines, Knoll or Bloomingdale’s logos (this latter was made internationally famous thanks to the “brown bags”), the NY subway map, iconic plastic dinnerware for Heller or chairs for Knoll… Massimo and Lella Vignelli, co-founder of Vignelli Associates, spent decades designing packaging, furniture, interiors, products, transportation & architectural graphics, magazines and books, corporate identity. One of their most famous mottos? “We like design to visually powerful, intellectually elegant, above all timeless”. Timeless, indeed.
